Allard Pierson Workshop: Throw your freedom into the world!

On 5 May, we organised a Freedom Bomb workshop at Allard Pierson to let Amsterdam bloom as a symbol of freedom!

A freedom bomb is a small, powerful bomb, but one that brings life! Made from wild flower seeds, soil and clay, this bomb grows into a colourful field of freedom. In places scarred by war, we bring new life and hope.

Freedom in conversation

In a world full of intense news stories, we took the time to reflect on what freedom is to us. We shared our thoughts, drew our feelings on tablecloths and explored what freedom means to each of us.

Create your own impact

After the conversation, we got to work! The participants rolled, kneaded and shaped their own freedom bombs to throw into nature. A playful, powerful way to pass on freedom – literally and figuratively. Creating something beautiful and meaningful, and turn negativity into a powerful, positive gesture. To leave a lasting trace of freedom and colour.

The workshop was combined with a presentation by Charlotte Kleyn, culinary historian and journalist. She talked about wartime cookbooks, rationing coupons in Amsterdam restaurants and freedom meals, based on the large collection of food history materials managed by Allard Pierson. Charlotte also curated the exhibition Amsterdam Eet at the museum.

All in all, it was a wonderful afternoon during which small seed bombs grew into big gestures of freedom and solidarity.
